Within cross-border cooperation we are working on the project named "LETꞌS TASTE".
Location of the project is part of Slovakia – Košice Governing Region and part of the Ukrainian side - Transcarpathian region. Part of the project activities will be implemented in the district Rožňava and the second one in area of Užhorod. Užhorod is the town in western Ukraine on the river Uh near the border with Slovakia. It is the centre of the Transcarpathian region, which is the only one Ukrainian region with borders of 4 countries - Poland, Slovak, Hungary and Romania. Bordering between Slovakia and Ukraine are counties of Košice and Prešov.
The project is designed for all people living in these border areas. There will be generated tangible results for them. The main impact and positive contribution on the project will have a minority of Ukrainian citizens in Slovakia and vice-versa Slovak citizens in Ukraine. They will have the opportunity to present their culture and induce a feeling of home in a foreign country. It also will create potential for understanding and acceptance of them as a minority.
The second important group are children and young people, who want to raise the knowledge of their culture and continuation of the traditions and customs for the other generations. During the various actions and events we allow them to learn about their culture in a new interesting design and through them known and accessible formats (Internet, video on YouTube, a fusion of traditional elements with modern elements...).
By involving to the project will also be influenced the local and regional authorities, which gain another possibilities how to present to tourist and to ordinary people themselves and their area in more attractive form. Likewise, non-governmental and non-profit organizations, which seek to support regions with lower level of employment, but with great potential natural or cultural heritage.
… so close and also so distant. The territory, which was for decades a part of our country, but now there is virtually no cultural or social bonds. Transcarpathian Ukraine – a big unknown for the eastern border of Slovakia, ever before the common area in Czechoslovakia - Eastern Slovakia and Ruthenia, currently divided by the Schengen Borders Code. This limit prevents knowledge of the culture of today's Slovakia and Ukraine.
Likewise, as we have been under the influence of Russia for a long time, Ukraine belonged directly to the Soviet Union. But it is not the only thing that had united us. We have common Slavic roots, the affinity of culture and language similarities. The potential of each area is created through the localization in the border area. The problem is that this potential is not fully exploited due to the lack of cooperation, awareness, lack of infrastructure and sharing of knowledge on the affected area. Therefore, both parties decided to implement the project in the area with unusual traditional, landscape and natural values that would help solve the unfavourable situation and contribute to socio-economic development of the region.
In this project we want to build a network of the new partnerships and to strengthen the existing partnerships and increase the knowledge of neighbouring cultures by them to know each other traditional features and ways of life. The primary interest is the preservation and regeneration of natural, cultural and historical particularities and traditions of the border region and its use through tourism. We will learn about traditional crafts, traditional cuisine and traditional drinks, elements of folk architecture.
The long-term outcome, which is monitored in the project, is the increase of tourist potential, also the socio-economic recovery of the border region areas. An increase in tourism will then be reflected on the Ukrainian and Slovakian side as well and contribute to the boost of the economic activity on both sides of the border.
The results of the project are set especially for the residents of the regions, for domestic and foreign tourists in the mapped areas as well. The goal of the project and its activities are non-profit nature and are intended to promote cross-border cooperation and activities "people to people and institutions to the institutions."
Planned activities are focused:
- creating new contacts for each social recognition of people living in the border region (social, cultural events, events promoting cross-border cooperation and learning, national cuisine) oriented at further exploring institutions, people, towns and villages within the border regions, their customs and culture
- the promotion of traditional crafts and products, regional cultural traditions and heritage, the local culture
The first step is start of the analysis of border territory associated with video and photo documentation. There was done no extensive research for the needs of the gastronomic tourism to the concerned area and its promotion to the general public for a long time. The "LETꞌS TASTE" enables with its content to conduct a survey of the extent, in which the selected destinations are mapped at once closely linked areas. The aim is to develop a common expert analysis of the two areas that will bring detailed information about traditional elements, customs and traditions, which are characteristic for both areas. The survey will be carried out also in the agricultural sector, the wine region and in the "pálenčiarstvo". An interesting feature is the collection of traditional recipes by location together with their historical and cultural heritage. The result of this activity will be an expert study, which describes in detail the current status of the selected target sites along the borders and create a basis for the effective implementation of the project and achieve its objectives
- creating conditions for the cross-border cooperation and the promotion of socio-economic development of the border region.
The collected information will be visually and graphically processed in various forms to facilitate their promotion and propagation.
All these activities are aimed at approximation traditions and culture as a theory. In the meaning “twice to hear and see once”, we want to bring the traditional crafts and culture experience form to the residents and tourists. The project will create a place where the culture and traditions "come alive" in literally sense.
House of the traditional cuisine and handicrafts is the right place. This is a historic house built in 1938 in its original condition. Reconstruction of the original building will restore its original character with the focus to save the original architecture and original construction elements. In one room we create a memorial room of traditional folk life. The original furniture and accessories will be kept and will highlight the traditional way of life of native peoples (mannequins with regional costumes in original style with the original accessories...). The second room is a kitchen in the original style with traditional wood stove called "špárovňa". The kitchen will serve the old kitchen cooking samples. For visitors there will be done baking homemade bread and cakes in a wood-burning oven and cooking display of old traditional dishes with locally sourced ingredients. Last room is furnished as a craft workshop and equipped with the original craftsmen tools for producing traditional products of wood, aluminium, wicker, carpets and linen. This will be used for samples of wooden shingles, wooden toys, handicrafts, earthenware jugs, wicker baskets, carpets, embroideries....
